What we look for

Qualities and Experience

At NMAPS what we look for is ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about their subject. They have the desire to share their passion with young people of all abilities.

You will be a confident and articulate communicator.

You will be keen to contribute to the wider school community as well as the subject team.

We look for applicants who demonstrate this through meaningful experience of working with young people in the age group they wish to train for. Such experience need not necessarily be paid work, but could include for example helping with a sports team, a drama group or a youth club.

We would recommend that applicants gain some school experience, in order to help them decide whether teaching is the right career path for them.

And some formalities too….

  • Above all we look for trainees who demonstrate sound Mathematics or Physics subject knowledge. Ideally an honours degree in the subject you wish to teach. If your degree is in an unrelated subject, we will look at candidates who have a good A-level in maths or physics. In this case they will be required to do a subject knowledge enhancement course.
  • GCSE in English and Mathematics at a minimum grade C or 4
  • Professional Skills Test in numeracy and literacy
  • Successful candidates will have to undergo a DBS and occupational health check.
