A team of outstanding, practising teachers is developing the subject knowledge and pegdagogy course designed by Dr Jennie Golding, UCL Institute of Education and former President of the Mathematical Association. The course is highly relevant and up to date and will be led in each of our Hub schools by a practising teacher. Because this SCITT is specialised, we are able to offer a considerably enhanced specialist training programme:
- 14.5 days of subject knowledge and pedagogy
- 14.5 days of professional study
- 3 days primary school placement
- Experience of alternative provision settings
A national, three-day residential pre-induction course will be held immediately prior to the start of the new academic year to set the expectation of the training year and to allow you forge bonds with other trainees.
The majority of time will be spent in the main placement school, with a six week second placement in a contrasting school. Main placements can be in schools in either the State or Independent sector. The six week placement will be arranged in consultation with trainees and the main placement school. Shorter placements will ensure that trainees gain exposure to the full range of English teaching organisations: state comprehensive and selective schools; independent, primary and special schools; and pupil referral units. Trainees experience teaching across all key stages, including Sixth Form. The NMAPS Maths programme allows the trainee teachers to develop an understanding of their pupils, the education system in England today and to experience first-hand collaboration between the state and independent sectors.
Subject knowledge and Professional studies training will be delivered by tutors who have been chosen because of the high quality of their own teaching practice, experience and impact. Trainees will be individually supported by a high quality mentor from their placement school who they will meet weekly to discuss progress and offer support.
The programme provides regular professional networking and social opportunities throughout the PGCE training year and beyond. Links with leading universities and key professional associations will provide on-going high quality professional development.
During the spring term we would expect all our trainees to be making good progress towards the Teachers’ Standards and be on track to achieve QTS.
On successful completion of the training year, trainees are awarded QTS by NMAPS and a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) by Buckingham University, England’s only independent university and top in three National rankings.
